Arroyo Grande Police Chief Michael Martinez has graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) National Command Course. The National Command Course (NCC) is offered to chief executives of agencies with fewer than 50 sworn officers. Attendees are selected through a competitive nomination and application process to represent field offices nationwide. This was the FBI’s third Command Course since its inception in 2020.
 
Chief Martinez was one of 46 police chiefs selected nationwide to attend the NCC, and one of three chiefs selected from California. He represented the FBI’s Los Angeles field office who covered expenses for him to attend. On average, approximately 80% of police departments in the nation have 50 members or less, leading the FBI to develop this specialty course, which is designed to expose leaders to emerging trends in law enforcement.
 
The course was created to include facilitated discussions between subject matter experts and other participants, leadership training, and the exchange of ideas and solutions to problems confronted by smaller law enforcement agencies. Segments of the training focused on specific topics throughout the week that included threat assessment, recruitment and retention, officer wellness, organizational integrity, strategic leadership, and constitutional issues in policing. The attendees discussed current topics facing the law enforcement profession networking among Chiefs and Sheriffs across the nation.
