San Leandro Police Investigate Fatal Traffic Accident:

On Saturday, July 30th, at about 4:12 pm, San Leandro Police officers were sent to investigate a vehicle collision in the area of Washington Avenue and Castro Street. Upon our arrival, we found a 25-year-old adult male suffering from significant injuries and unconsciousness. During our investigation, it was discovered the male was riding a dirtbike when he collided with a van. The driver of the dirtbike was transported to an area hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the van remained on the scene and is cooperating with the police. Based on the severity of the accident, our Traffic Division officers responded to assume further responsibility for this investigation.  Our preliminary investigation has revealed the driver of the dirtbike was not wearing a helmet.

"The San Leandro Police Department offers our condolences to the family of the decedent. This is a staunch reminder for everyone to watch out for one another while on the road," said Lieutenant Matthew Barajas.

  • If you're riding a bicycle, please stay to the right of the road or use the designated bike lane. Also, please ride your bicycle in the same direction of traffic, according to state law (21650.1 California Vehicle Code).
