Take Five Briefing - 8/2

Here is the latest Take Five briefing from the August 2, 2022 meeting of the Mayor and Borough Council.

Stop & Shop: The Mayor and Borough Council acknowledge that the possible closure of Stop & Shop would be a big loss to our walkable town. It is one of the Mayor’s highest priorities to make sure the Borough continues to have a grocery store in town and she is already in conversations with both Stop & Shop corporate and other companies to find a positive solution to this situation. As more information is ascertained, it will be shared with residents.

Arts in the Park: Highland Park’s much anticipated Arts in the Park is returning to Raritan Avenue on Sunday, September 11th from 11:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Arts in the Park is Main Street Highland Park’s annual street festival, juried art show, and arts and crafts sale. In its 16th year, Arts in the Park draws thousands of art enthusiasts and visitors from the region to enjoy artistic offerings, live music, delicious food, children’s activities, and much more.

National Night Out: Highland Park’s National Night Out, hosted by the Highland Park Police Department (HPPD), will take place next Tuesday, August 9th from 6 – 9 p.m. at the Irving School Playground on Woodbridge Avenue. National Night Out is an annual opportunity for the HPPD to connect with the community and provide a safe and fun evening for kids and families. This year’s offerings include games, a DJ, bounce houses, food trucks, and free kosher ice cream for the first 300 attendees sponsored by the Woodbridge Avenue Neighborhood Preservation Program (NPP).

Ordinance Introductions: Three ordinances were introduced during the meeting and public hearings prior to a vote on their passage will be held on Tuesday, September 6th at 7 p.m. The first ordinance redefines some of the duties and responsibilities of the Shade Tree Advisory Committee (STAC). The second ordinance amends the Borough’s code to adopt new standards governing flood damage prevention measures as set by the NJDEP. The third ordinance prohibits firearms in all Borough buildings.

Conditional Developer Resolution: Borough Council authorized a resolution to designate 232 Raritan Avenue, LLC (Garden Homes) as the conditional developer for the property identified as Tract C in the Downtown Redevelopment Plan and conduct an interim cost and conditional designation agreement. With this designation, the Borough and 232 Raritan Avenue, LLC (Garden Homes) may pursue pre-development activities including but not limited to review of the conditional developer’s proposal and negotiation and preparation of a redevelopment agreement.
