Juvenile suspects identified in auto thefts
The Sheboygan Police Department arrested one juvenile offender overnight after a vehicle was stolen from a residence on the north side of town. Two suspects are still being sought.
On Thursday, 8/4/22, at 02:21 hours, an officer attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 3000 block of Calumet Drive. The vehicle failed to stop for the officer while inside Evergreen Park, and the occupants then abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Several individuals that were involved were later located nearby. Police later found out that this vehicle had been stolen earlier in the morning but had not yet been reported as the owner was not aware that their vehicle had been stolen.
The investigation led to the arrest of a 14-year-old Sheboygan male who has been referred to juvenile authorities for auto theft charges. At this time there are additional charges for two other known juvenile offenders, and efforts are underway to locate them. While investigating this incident, Sheboygan Police learned that all three juveniles were involved in the theft of a different vehicle from Sheboygan’s north side last Friday, 7/29/22.
Both vehicles have been recovered and returned to their respective owners. All juveniles will be referred to the Sheboygan County District Attorney's Office on charges of operating a motor vehicle without owner’s consent and theft.
In both of these cases linked to this group of juveniles, the target of the theft was an unlocked “push-to-start” vehicle with key fobs left in the vehicle. These are crimes of opportunity. When an unlocked vehicle is discovered, attempting to start the vehicle is an easy next step for thieves looking for a joyride.
Until residents build the habit of locking their vehicles and removing any keys or key fobs, or anything else of value, Sheboygan will continue to experience these types of opportunistic thefts. This means that if you don’t want your car stolen, you have to remember the simple prevention steps “TAKE – REMOVE – LOCK” every night when you park your car. Take your keys, remove any valuables, and lock your vehicle.
To help remind residents of the avoidable risk of these types of thefts, Sheboygan Police are conducting vehicle courtesy inspections in targeted neighborhoods. Officers visually inspect vehicles for the factors that lead to thefts – unlocked doors and valuables or keys left in plain view – and then leave a card on the windshield with the results.
We appreciate the work of community members who are diligent about safety and prevention and are helping our community avoid thefts and other crimes. We also are grateful for attentive community members who report information that leads to the recovery of stolen property and arrests of those responsible.
