Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Investigators are continuing to assist the Arcadia Police Department with their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attempted murder of an Arcadia Police Department Officer in the city of Arcadia.
Officers from the Arcadia Police Department responded to a home in the 2500 block of Greenfield Avenue regarding a family disturbance, man with a gun call on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, at approximately 5:40 PM.
Upon arriving, Arcadia Police Officers learned the 47-year-old son, Nurhan Venk, was inside the home threatening his mother, Ankine Venk, who is 73 years old. Nurhan went to his mother’s house that afternoon and was armed with handguns. Officers also learned a twelve-year-old male family member was inside the home at the time. As the officers were talking to the victim outside the house, they heard at least two gunshots come from inside.
The officers approached the house and heard additional gunshots fired from inside the house. One officer was struck by gunfire. They retreated as additional rounds were fired from within the home. At that time, Ankine Venk, along with her 12-year-old grandson, were able to run from the home to safety. Ankine sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. Officers also learned an additional victim had been struck by gunfire. 83-year-old Zoo Ching Yang, who lives across the street from the location, was inside his home at the time when he was struck in the face by a stray bullet that penetrated a bedroom window frame.
The injured officer, along with Victims Ankine Venk and Zoo Ching Yang were transported via ambulance to a nearby hospital where they underwent treatment for critical but non-life-threatening injuries.
Suspect Nurhan Venk barricaded himself inside the home for the next several hours. Investigators learned he was the only person inside the home and all others associated to the house were accounted for. After hours of negotiations with Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Crisis Negotiation Team, Suspect Nurhan Venk surrendered to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Bureau deputies without incident.
Suspect Nurhan Venk sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. Investigators believe Suspect Nurhan Venk’s gunshot injuries were accidental and self-inflicted. No officers discharged their firearms during this incident.
Suspect Venk was transported to a local hospital where he was treated. He was arrested and later booked on attempted murder of a peace officer and additional attempted murder charges.
