Incident Summary
The City of Petaluma Gun Buyback at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds on August 13, 2022, saw 150 firearms voluntarily turned in by residents over a 4- hour period in the first ever buyback event held in Petaluma and Sonoma County.

This event was hosted and coordinated in collaboration with the City of Petaluma Police, Finance, and Public Works Departments. The Petaluma Police Department would like to thank members of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad (EOD) and Officers from the Santa Rosa Police Department for their presence and assistance at the event as well.

The City of Petaluma and the Petaluma Police Department appreciates and thanks residents who participated in making this event a success and helped increase community safety by reducing access to unwanted firearms.

During the event a total of 150 Firearms were voluntarily turned in consisting of the following weapon types:

Handguns: 59
Rifles and Shotguns:89
Assault Weapons:2

Of the weapons collected:

2 had qualifying characteristics as assault weapons.
2 were completed 80 percent polymer handgun lowers without affixed DOJ approved unique serial numbers.
1 was a ghost gun containing no serial number, brand, or model.

All of the firearms from this event will be destroyed unless they are found to be stolen and returned to their owner.

Up to $100 was offered per handgun or rifle and $200 per assault weapon. As a result of the firearms that were turned in, $15,100 in cash was dispersed.
