Borough Urges Residents and Businesses to Conserve Water as New Jersey Declares Drought Watch

Borough Urges Residents and Businesses to Conserve Water as New Jersey Declares Drought Watch

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has issued a statewide drought watch and is urging residents and businesses to conserve water as persistent dry and hot conditions continue to stress water supplies throughout the state.

The declaration of a drought watch is the first in the State’s three-stage drought advisory system. The watch is intended to sow public awareness and appreciation of the stress upon water supply sources and encourage voluntary water conservation measures.

The Borough’s water system is currently operating normally and is at expected capacity, but we are experiencing a steep increase in demand.

Effective immediately, the Borough is implementing voluntary water conservation measures and is recommending an odd/even schedule for outdoor watering. Water conservation and practicing odd/even watering will help the Borough manage our water supply. The water conservation measures and odd/even water guidelines are provided below:
  • Outdoor water use on odd-numbered days of the month if the LAST number in your street address is an odd number.
  • Outdoor water use on even-numbered days of the month if the LAST number in your street address is an even number.
  • Water early or late in the day to minimize evaporation.
  • Use a commercial car wash that recycles water.
  • Sweep driveways, sidewalks, and steps, rather than using a hose.
  • Cover your pool when not in use, to reduce evaporation rates.
  • Water the root zone of plants instead of the foliage.

Exceptions are:
  • Watering of new sod or seed if daily watering is required. (NOTE: Planting of new sod or seed that has not already taken place should be delayed until the fall.)
  • Commercial uses of outdoor water, such as for nurseries, power washing, plumbing, and car washes.

If conditions do not improve, a declaration of a drought warning or a drought emergency with mandatory water use restrictions may become necessary.

Additional tips on ways you can conserve water use can be found at the following link: dep.nj.gov/conserve-water.

Fair Lawn Emergency Management and the Fair Lawn Water Department will continue to monitor this situation and issue additional bulletins as necessary. Voluntary conservation measures at this stage can help avoid more serious and restrictive drought conditions in the future.
