STATEWIDE FLEX ALERT: AUG 17 from 4-9pm

STATEWIDE FLEX ALERT: AUG 17 from 4-9pm

A statewide Flex Alert has been issued in California urging consumers to conserve electricity due to the record-breaking heatwave.  Consumers should be prepared for likely rolling outages during the late afternoons and early evenings.

Consumers are asked to avoid using power between 4 pm and 9 pm by following these tips:
• Set air conditioning thermostats to 78 degrees, if health permits.
• Defer use of major appliances
• Turn off unnecessary lights.
• Unplug unused electrical devices.
• Close blinds and drapes.
• Use fans when possible.
• Limit time the refrigerator door is open.

You can also prepare for the Flex Alert by following these tips before 4 pm:
• “Pre-cool” their homes, or lower air conditioning thermostats to 72 degrees.
o Charge electric vehicles.
o Charge mobile devices and laptops.
o Run dishwashers, washing machines and other major appliances.
o Set pool pumps to run in the early morning or late at night.

You should also:
• Keep an emergency contact list: Keep a list of emergency phone numbers.
• Have a buddy system: Check in on elderly or frail people.
• Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water, even when you are not thirsty.
• Stay cool: Take a cool shower or bath and wear lightweight, loose, light-colored clothing.
• Stay safe: Stay out of direct sunlight and avoid alcoholic or caffeinated beverages.

If a large number of consumers do their part in small ways, conservation can make a difference.
