Meridian Police Reminds Drivers to Slow Down as Schools Resume
MERIDIAN- With Meridian schools set to start back up on August 23, 2022, the Meridian Police Department would like to remind drivers of the “rules of the road” in school zones and around bus stops.

Most school zones are clearly marked with flashing yellow lights and fluorescent signage indicating the speed limit in that area. Drivers who fail to slow down to school-zone speeds (generally posted at 20 mph or slower when children likely will be present) will pay enhanced fines. The posted speed limit signs indicate the school zone, the reduced speed limit and one of the following:
  • Hours of the day when the speed limit is in effect.
  • The speed limit is in effect when an electrical or mechanical sign indicates.
  • The speed limit is in effect at all times on school days.
“Distractions while driving can be especially dangerous in school zones,” said Sergeant Justin Dance. “We are asking drivers to keep their eyes on the road, watch out for children crossing in marked and unmarked areas, and to stop for buses when the stop-arm is extended.”

Drivers accustomed to traveling unimpeded through school zones the past three months will need to pay close attention for kids in the area including: inattentive children stepping from curbs, wayward bicycles straying into traffic, and buses stopped for student loading and unloading. Pay attention to flashing lights and never pass another vehicle with the stop-arm extended. Slow down and watch for children walking in the street, especially when there are no sidewalks.

School children also share a responsibility to be aware of increased traffic along school routes. Parents and teachers should encourage children to watch for distracted drivers and realize that cars may not slow for flashing lights or crossing guards.
