Advisory

Redwood City Police Activity at Hoover Park

On 8/19/22 at approximately 1534 hours, Redwood City Police Officers responded to Hoover Park for reports of gunshots fired.  Officers arrived on scene and located a witness who was at the playground when they observed two adult males walking toward each other inside the center of the grass field.  One of the subjects began firing a handgun at the other subject several times before both subjects fled the area.  During this time, the park had a small number of children and parents inside the playground area, and there were no people on the soccer field next to the park.

Approximately 2 minutes after the first report of the gunshots, The Boys & Girls Club, which is located about 50 yards northwest of Hoover Park, called police to report two windows had been struck by gunfire.  Staff confirmed nobody inside the Boys & Girls Club was struck by gunfire, but one adult staff member was hit with glass as it shattered onto their hand.  This staff member did not require medical attention at the scene.  The Boys & Girls Club staff members reacted appropriately by following protocol and locked down the building.  Hoover Elementary School, which is located just south of Hoover Park, also went into lockdown as school was still in session.  There were no signs of any windows or buildings struck by gunfire at the Hoover Elementary School.

Approximately 30 Officers/Deputies, 2 K-9 Units, 4 Sergeants, and 2 Lieutenants consisting of members from the Redwood City Police Department, San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department, San Mateo Police Department, and County Gang Task Force arrived on scene to assist in this incident.  Officers and Deputies set up a perimeter around Hoover Park, Hoover Elementary School, and the Boys & Girls Club prior to conducting a search for any outstanding subjects possibly related to the shooting.  Once officers/deputies on scene confirmed there were no outstanding suspects, a canvass for evidence resulted in the discovery and collection of several .9mm ammunition casings found on the center grass field of Hoover Park.

Officers contacted the Boys & Girls Club and assisted 26 students and 15 staff members out of the building, escorting them to their families outside.  Officers also assisted approximately 300 Hoover Elementary School students and 40 staff members out of 16 classrooms in total, escorting them to their families outside.

Statements taken from witnesses at the scene appear to conclude the shooting was between two male adults and there is no ongoing public threat at this time, and there are no hospital reports of anyone struck by gunfire.  The case is currently assigned and being worked by Redwood City Street Crime Detectives.  Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Redwood City Police Department’s Investigations Unit at 650-780-7111.
