Bicyclist Killed in Rancho Cucamonga When a Driver Under the Influence Struck Him on the Road

DATE/TIME: August 20, 2022 at 1:58 a.m.

INCIDENT: Fatal Traffic Collision

LOCATION: Arrow Route and Haven Avenue

SUSPECT(S): Gerald Willis, 49-year-old male from Rancho Cucamonga, CA

VICTIM(S): Deceased Bicyclist - name withheld pending notification of next of kin



SUMMARY: On Saturday, August 20, 2022, at approximately 1:58 a.m., deputies from the Rancho Cucamonga Station responded to the area of Haven Avenue and Arrow Route for a report of a collision involving a vehicle and bicyclist. Deputies and medical personnel arrived and located the bicyclist, who had succumbed to his injuries. 

The bicyclist was riding on the shoulder of the #2 westbound lane of Arrow Route toward Haven Avenue with his juvenile son and ten other bicyclists. Gerald Willis drove in the same direction and struck the bicyclist from behind. Willis was found to be driving under the influence and was booked into the West Valley Detention Center for PC 191.5(a) Gross Vehicular Manslaughter. 

The Rancho Cucamonga Sheriff Station's Major Accident Investigation Team responded and assumed the investigation.
