Press Release - Robberies in Fremont Led Investigators to Union City
On August 3, 2022, Fremont Detectives were investigating a series of robberies in which one or more suspects approached the victim(s) and robbed them of their necklace. In some of the robberies, a firearm was brandished.
As detectives caught up to the suspect vehicle, they observed a red 2005 Nissan Murano that appeared to be “casing” for victims. Detectives observed two juveniles who quickly exited the vehicle and approached a woman who was wearing a necklace. One of the juveniles grabbed the woman and stole her necklace before fleeing to the waiting Murano. A bystander attempted to intervene and was shot in the leg by one of the juveniles.
Detectives on scene immediately contacted the robbery victim, who was determined to be uninjured. Detectives also contacted the bystander who suffered the gunshot wound and provided medical aid until an ambulance arrived.
Simultaneously, other detectives pursued the Nissan Murano through Union City, into Hayward, and ultimately into Oakland where a PIT (Pursuit Intervention Technique) maneuver was used to disable the vehicle. Three suspects, an adult driver and two juvenile passengers, fled on foot but were quickly arrested by Fremont Police without incident.
Suspect one: The adult male driver was identified as Ronald Hayes, 29 years old, out of Union City. Hayes was charged with PC 211 - robbery, PC 245(b) - assault with a deadly weapon, PC 246 - malicious discharge of a firearm, PC 26100(b) - driver permits discharge of a firearm from a vehicle, and VC 2800.4 - evading police. Hayes has previous felony convictions for PC 29805 - unlawful firearm possession, PC 25850(a) - possession of a loaded firearm in a public place, and PC 29800(a)(1) - felon in possession of a firearm. Hayes has been on formal felony probation in Alameda County for being a felon in possession of a firearm since January 2022. As of the time of this press release, Hayes is still in custody.
