| Agents from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) and deputies from the Community Resources Unit (CRU), conducted a minor decoy operation in the City of Camarillo. During a decoy operation, an person under the age of twenty-one years old, is sent into an establishment to purchase alcohol. On August 25, 2022, fourteen businesses, including three major grocery stores, were investigated to verify the sale of alcohol to minors was not occurring. Two business, Centro Market and La Bodega sold alcohol to the decoy. The sales clerks at both locations were contacted by agents and issued citations. The businesses, if convicted, could face fines of up to $3000 dollars for the illegal sale of alcohol to minors. All businesses investigated later receive written notification of the results of the operation. Twelve of the businesses were compliant and did not sell alcohol to the decoy during the operation. Underage drinking has multiple negative effects including damaging the brain from fully developing. Underage drinking is also the main contributing factor in vehicle collisions for persons between the ages of sixteen and twenty years old. The CRU will continue to work with ABC Agents and other entities to educate and enforce underage drinking laws. Establishments who continue selling to minors risk losing their alcohol sales licenses and additional fines. Anyone who knows of establishments who sell alcohol to minors can call the Sheriff’s Office at (805) 654-9511 or email [email protected]. People who call can remain anonymous. Partial funding for this operation was provided by a grant from ABC through the department’s Alcohol Policing Partnership (APP) Program. |
