Newark Officers Arrest Shooting Suspect
Newark, California (Tuesday, August 30, 2022)
On Monday, August 29, 2022 at approximately 9:26 p.m., Newark Police received a report of a residence being struck by gunfire in the 36000 block of Cherry St. Newark Police Officers quickly responded, arriving at the location within less than two minutes of the call, and located two involved suspects. The suspects disregarded the first responding Officer’s commands and entered an awaiting getaway vehicle. At this time, the Officer observed a firearm in one of the suspect’s hands as he entered the front passenger side of the vehicle. The suspects fled in the vehicle at a high rate of speed.
Based on the totality of the circumstances, the officer pursued the vehicle for approximately 1.25 mi. While fleeing, the suspect vehicle turned northbound onto Newark Blvd in the southbound lanes, in wanton disregard for the safety of others, ultimately colliding with an uninvolved motorist.
Immediately after impact, the driver fled on foot. As additional officers responded to the area, the solo officer gave further commands to the sole passenger. The passenger suspect was ultimately taken into custody with the assistance of arriving officers. Officers set up a perimeter in the area, however the driver is still outstanding. A firearm was recovered in the vehicle.
The passenger, Iziah Martinez, a 19-year-old male who resides in Fremont, was ultimately arrested for several serious charges including; assault with a semiautomatic firearm, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, evading a peace officer, and resisting arrest. He was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries sustained during the collision and subsequently booked at Santa Rita Jail.
The uninvolved victim motorist was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries. No other injuries have been reported as a result of this incident.
Newark Police Detectives are actively investigating this shooting incident. At this time, the motive remains unknown.
