7 DUI arrests and 5 collisions on the first day of the Labor Weekend
Labor Day Weekend is one of the busiest vehicle traffic weekends. On Friday in Petaluma, it began with 5 collisions during the day. Two Hit and Run collisions, two Property Damage collisions and one vehicle roll-over that resulted in minor injuries. On Friday night, Petaluma PD deployed two officers to conduct a DUI Saturation Patrol for the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) Impaired Driving Labor Day Campaign. Between 5:30 PM and 2:30 AM, the two officers and Patrol officers arrested 7 DUI drivers. Since the beginning of the campaign on August 17th, Petaluma PD has made 19 DUI arrests. During the same period in 2021, 14 DUI arrests were made.
Although impaired driving is dangerous and prevalent year-round, the end of summer and Labor Day Weekend period are particularly deadly on the roadways of California. The Petaluma Police Department wants to remind the community about the dangers of drunk and impaired driving.
Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license. The Labor Day Campaign continues through September 5th. Petaluma PD will be conducting additional DUI Saturation patrols through the weekend.
Funding for the DUI Saturation Patrol was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
