Scam Alert
The Central Marin Police Authority took a fraud report this week where the victim was asked if they had a bank account in Texas. When the victim indicated they did not have a bank account in Texas, they were informed they would receive a call from an officer. Shortly after the first call, the victim stated she received a call from an officer. The victim could not recall the officer's name but was confident the call came from our non-emergency phone line.
The Central Marin Police Authority or any other law enforcement agency does not call community members seeking payment regarding bank accounts.
If you are a resident who lives in Corte Madera, Larkspur, or San Anselmo and are a victim of these scammers with a financial loss, you are encouraged to file a report by calling the Central Marin Police Authority non-emergency phone number at (415) 927-5150.
Tips to help avoid becoming a victim of this scam include:
* Never give personal or financial information to an unsolicited caller or email.
* Be suspicious of callers who demand immediate payment for any reason.
* Stay private. Regularly update privacy settings for social media sites. Scammers often make their stories more believable by trolling for personal information on Facebook, Twitter, and similar sites.
* Never wire money or provide a stranger with debit or credit card numbers.
