South waterfront bikeway improvements announced; Be a Green Fair vendor; First Street Sundays returns; and more

South waterfront bikeway improvements begin 9/14

The City and the South Waterfront Corporation are partnering to enhance mobility and improve pedestrian and bicycle safety by upgrading the bikeway along the waterfront walkway from Pier A to Pier C. Proposed improvements include:

  • Connecting the bikeway to the waterfront walkway at 4th Street and Newark Street
  • Consolidating crosswalks to direct pedestrians from the west side of Sinatra Drive to the waterfront walkway
  • Upgrading the signage and surface of the bikeway to meet modern standards
  • Additional tree plantings and vegetation east and west of the bicycle path
  • New wayfinding signage and benches
Certain areas of the waterfront bikeway will be unavailable to the community during construction, which is scheduled to begin next week and end in December 2022.

The City is dedicated to ensuring public health and safety during construction, and the project includes measures addressing health and safety that the Contractor must abide to, including measures to minimize noise, dust, and odor. The project will follow an approved soil erosion and sediment control plan.

The contractor will undertake the following activities from Wednesday, Sept. 14,  through Friday, Sept. 16, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. with equipment set up beginning at 7 a.m., subject to weather conditions:
  • Stripping the landscape area between Sinatra Drive and the bikeway
  • Beginning planting and landscaping
The south waterfront improvements are funded by the South Waterfront Corporation, with no funding from the municipal budget.

Be a Hoboken Green Fair vendor

The Hoboken Green Team seeks vendors for the annual Hoboken Green Fair. The fair seeks to promote sustainable lifestyle choices and raise awareness of environmental issues.

The fair will be held at Church Square Park on Oct. 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For more information, or to register as a vendor, go to www.hobokennj.gov/greenfair.

First Street closed to vehicular traffic on Sundays

First Street from Park Avenue to Washington Street will be closed to vehicular traffic on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Sept. 11 through Nov. 20 with the exception of Oct. 2 and Oct. 30 for First Street Sundays. The Hoboken Business Alliance-sponsored initiative seeks to drive more foot traffic to local businesses on First Street by closing the street for pedestrians and outdoor dining.

The Hoboken Police Department will have officers on site to manage traffic impacts.
