OSBI INVESTIGATES OFFICER-INVOLVED-SHOOTING INVOLVING ELK CITY POLICE OFFICERS

*** The following update is based on an active and ongoing investigation. The OSBI's initial understanding of the facts and circumstances may evolve over the course of the investigation as witnesses are interviewed and evidence is collected and analyzed.
Upon completion of the OSBI investigation, agents will submit a report summarizing their investigation to the District Attorney’s Office. The District Attorney will determine whether or not to file charges.
ELK CITY, Okla. (September 9, 2022) – The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) is investigating an officer-involved-shooting involving officers with the Elk City Police Department. Based on the initial investigation, this is what is known at this time:
- The OSBI was requested at approximately 7:30 a.m. by the Elk City Police Department to investigate a shooting that involved their officers and a male subject.
- At 6:15 a.m., Elk City officers arrived at 1402 S. Simpson to serve Edwin Medina Baires (2/18/1982) with multiple felony arrest warrants.
- Officers made entry into the house and located Baires in the home brandishing a sharp object.
- Officers made multiple attempts to convince Baires to put the weapon down, to which he did not comply.
- Baires charged at the officers and one fired their weapon.
- Baires was transported to the hospital in Elk City where he was pronounced deceased.
- The investigation is ongoing. There is no additional information to be released at this time.
