#LASD Community Alert, Tik Tok Auto Theft Craze, 2010-2021 KIA and HYUNDAI thefts (various models)
There has been an increase in Kia and Hyundai thefts in the last few months.
The recent TikTok Kia/Hyundai theft craze is caused by the lack of the two manufacturers having what is known as an ignition immobilizer, which prevents the car from being started without a key or key fob present. This trend is growing in popularity and police departments across the nation are experiencing this as well. The manufacturers have recommended
steering wheel locks.
TIPS TO MINIMIZE THEFTS:
- Install a steering wheel locking device
- Install a battery disconnect switch
- Install a kill switch (requires professional installation)
- Install an aftermarket car alarm (requires professional installation)
- Lock all windows and doors
- Park in a well-lit area
- Park in a secured location (i.e., garage, parking structure, etc.)
- Install GPS device
