Fatal hit and run collision involving a pedestrian. 16-year-old driver arrested.

On September 13, 2022 at 5:37 p.m., Gilroy police officers, along with Fire and Medics, responded to the intersection of First Street and Wren Avenue on the report of a hit and run vehicle collision involving a pedestrian.  Upon arrival, the pedestrian victim, a 92-year-old male and Gilroy resident who was riding a mobility scooter, was found unconscious in the roadway.  The victim was transported to a local trauma center where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
 
The suspect fled the scene.   
 
Based on witness statements, Gilroy officers were able to quickly identify the suspect vehicle using the City of Gilroy’s recently installed FLOCK Safety Camera System.  A 16-year-old male was later identified as the driver and was subsequently arrested. 
 
The juvenile was later booked into Juvenile Hall on the charges of 20001(a) VC, Hit-and-Run Resulting in Death or Injury, and 192(c)(1) PC, Vehicular Manslaughter.
 
The suspect vehicle was towed to the Gilroy Police Department where it will be inspected and processed for evidence by the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT).
