Driver of fatal hit-and-run on September 12, 2022 arrested.
Note: There were two seperate fatal hit and run collisions in Gilroy involving pedestrians between September 12 and September 13, 2022.
On September 14, 2022 at 10:23 a.m., the driver of the fatal hit and run collision involving a pedestrian that occurred on September 12, 2022 at 8:54 p.m., in the area of Wren Avenue and El Cerrito Way, turned himself in to the Gilroy Police Department.
The driver was identified as 54-year-old Gilroy resident Derek Shingu.
Shingu was later booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on the charges of 20001(a) VC, Hit-and-Run Resulting in Death or Injury, and 192(c)(1) PC, Vehicular Manslaughter.
The suspect vehicle was determined to a silver 2020 Jeep Cherokee. The vehicle was seized by the Gilroy Police Department where it will be inspected and processed for evidence by the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT).

Fatal vehicle vs. pedestrian hit and run. Assistance needed.
On September 12, 2022 at 8:54 p.m., the Gilroy Police Department received calls reporting a hit and run vehicle collision involving a pedestrian in the area of Wren Avenue and El Cerrito Way. Police, Fire, and Medics responded and immediately began first aid. The pedestrian victim, an adult male and Gilroy resident, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The suspect vehicle was described as a gray or charcoal colored SUV with front-end damage. The suspect vehicle was last seen fleeing the area northbound on Wren Avenue from El Cerrito Way.
The Gilroy Police Department is looking for witnesses who may have witnessed the collision or have surveillance footage that may have captured the vehicle in the area before or after the collision.
