Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide investigators are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Deputy-Involved Shooting in the unincorporated area of Los Angeles.
Deputies from the Century Station responded to an “Assault with a Deadly Weapon” call for service at the 1600 block of Imperial Highway in Los Angeles. The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, at approximately 11:29 P.M.
The call for service indicated a Black male adult wearing a black coat and a black hat had pointed a pistol at the informant. Deputies responded within moments and located a Black male adult in a black trench coat wearing a black hat, at the corner of Imperial Highway and Compton Avenue. As deputies exited their marked patrol vehicle to contact the male, the male produced a handgun, pointing it at the deputies. A deputy-involved shooting occurred. The male was struck in the leg by gunfire. He was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and is expected to survive.
A black replica semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the scene.
No deputies were injured during this incident.

Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and a person is struck by gunfire, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process. Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted. Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee. Input from Constitutional Policing Advisors is provided during the process. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.
