33 Cited and 1 arrested during Pedestrian Safety Operation

The Berkeley Police Department issued 33 citations and made 1 arrest for a variety of violations made by drivers during a pedestrian safety operation on September 22nd.
 
33 drivers were cited for violations including VC 21950(a)—Driver failure to yield to pedestrian, VC 23123—failure to use hands free, VC 27315(d)—seatbelt violation, VC 22450—failing to stop at a stop sign, VC 21806—failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, VC 22107—making an unsafe turn, and 1 person was arrested for Driving Under the Influence (DUI).
 
The operation took place on Martin Luther King Jr. Way at the Blake Street intersection as well as the intersection of Solano Avenue and Colusa Avenue.

“Safety is a shared responsibility, with drivers holding the greatest responsibility to keep other road users safe,” Lt. Jen Tate said. “We hope this operation serves as a reminder to everyone to practice due care and to look out for one another.”

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

This operation is one of several planned in Berkeley for the Pedestrian Safety Month.
