Pomona Police Safely Resolve Incident near Mission Blvd. and Appian Way
This morning at about 7:30 AM, Patrol Officers responded to a man with a gun call near the Eagle Scout Trail (Mission Blvd. and Appian Way), after a hiker reported seeing a man with a rifle in the trails. Officers quickly arrived on scene to assess the situation and determined the man was armed with what appeared to be a rifle with a scope. Officers formed a perimeter and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Air 8 airship was called in to assist.
Pomona PD’s SWAT and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) were activated as the man was seen repeatedly pointing the rifle at Officers.
Mission Blvd. was shut down between Humane Way and Temple Ave. and Officers were placed in the surrounding communities as a precautionary measure and for the safety of the community.
SWAT/CNT arrived on scene and took over the incident. The man walked closer to Officers and dropped the rifle, but he continued to remain uncooperative with Officers. The man proceeded to walk back up the trail and was pursued by SWAT/CNT in the Bearcat. At about 10:51 AM, the man came back down the trail toward Mission Blvd. and was successfully apprehended by Patrol Officers without incident. The Mental Health Team took the man to a local mental health facility for treatment.
The Pomona Police Department Crisis Negotiation Team is made up of Officers who are specially trained in how to safely resolve critical incidents, hostage and/or crisis situations. The team has been very successful in de-escalating situations and bringing them to a safe resolution.
