Attempted Armed Robbery Suspect Shoots at Officers While Fleeing
On Monday, 9/26/22, around 3:45 am, San Leandro Police officers responded to an attempted armed robbery at 7-11 convenience store located at 333 E. 14th Street. While at the scene, officers spoke with two victims who stated that a suspect pointed a handgun at them and demanded their belongings. However, the suspect fled the store without obtaining anything.
While officers were speaking with the victims at the store, the suspect was spotted across the street. Officers attempted to detain the suspect, who was armed with a handgun and an extended magazine. The suspect fled, leading officers to pursue him for approximately two blocks before the suspect fired a single shot at the officers. Thankfully, none of our officers were struck by the gunfire, and the officers continued their attempts to apprehend the suspect.
While in the 100 block of Durant Avenue, Officers caught up to the suspect, who pointed his firearm at himself and threatened to commit suicide. Several officers at the scene, who are Crisis Intervention Trained, attempted to de-escalate the incident, resulting in the suspect lowering his firearm and fleeing again. For safety reasons, Officers did not pursue the suspect further and established a containment perimeter. After an extensive search, the suspect was not found; however, his firearm was located in the 100 block of E 14th Street.
Detectives responded to 7-11 to collect surveillance footage and evidence from the shooting scene.
The suspect is a Hispanic male in his 40s wearing a black North Face jacket and tan pants.
