Beaufort County Emergency Management officials continue to monitor Hurricane Ian

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office continues to monitor Hurricane Ian and its potential impacts on Beaufort County.  Currently, Beaufort County is under a Tropical Storm Watch and Storm Surge Watch.  The timing and level of the impact are uncertain at this time.

Knowing the difference between a “watch” and a “warning”

According to the National Weather Service, a “watch” is used when the risk of hazardous weather or hydrologic (water cycle) events has increased significantly but its occurrence, location, or timing is still uncertain.  It is intended to provide enough lead time so those who need to set their plans in motion.  A watch means that hazardous weather is possible.  People should have a plan of action in case a storm threatens and should listen for later information and possible warnings.

A “warning” is issued when hazardous weather or hydrologic (water cycle) event is occurring, imminent or likely.  A warning means weather conditions pose a threat to life or property.  People in the path of the storm/event need to take protective action.
