Imagine you smoke marijuana recreationally, and have for some time. You are out with friends and smoke marijuana in the same fashion you always have, the same quantity, and maybe even purchased from the same location or person you always have. A few moments later you fall to the ground and your unconscious. Your friends are scrambling to get you help not knowing what just happened to you. You wake up with a police officer or paramedic standing over you. Someone tells you, you were revived by NARCAN. You think how can this be, I wasn’t using an opioid. This synopsis is not unique. This is an actual account of an incident in Janesville. For many people they are only intending to consume THC, THC gummies, cocaine, or heroin. For some people they had no intention of ingesting a powerful synthetic opioid when they consumed it, nor did they expect to overdose. This is fentanyl poisoning. Fentanyl poisoning is becoming common across the country as fentanyl continues to be distributed. “Rainbow Fentanyl” is the newest problem to hit the streets of America, and everyone needs to be aware of the dangers of fentanyl ingestion. Rainbow fentanyl is created to attract younger users. The drug is delivered in multiple forms, including in multicolored pills, powder or blocks that resemble sidewalk chalk. (DEA, 2022) When delivered in pill form it is pressed to look like Oxycodone and has a bright color like a “Sweetart.” Fentanyl does not have a smell, or taste. It only takes a small dose to be lethal. Those who have ingested fentanyl may experience the following symptoms,
Janesville is not immune to the presence of fentanyl nor the impact it has on those effected by addiction or recreational drug use. It is important for all to know, you do NOT need to be addicted opioids such as heroin to be at risk of a fentanyl overdose. We track statistics and anecdotal facts related to overdoses on a regular basis. Janesville has recorded 64 overdoses for calendar year 2022 so far. 15 of those overdoses have resulted in an overdose death. There are 15 overdose cases that can be specifically attributed to fentanyl. There are still a few overdose deaths we cannot confirm as a fentanyl poisoning because the toxicology report is not back yet. The Janesville Police Department actively investigates overdoses, narcotic sales, and assists in mental health cases where narcotics are impacting their health. The Street Crimes Unit, the detective bureau and the Crisis Intervention Team work on all aspects of overdoses in an effort to mitigate their impact. The crisis intervention team works closely with those impacted by opioid addiction through the DRoP program to help provide resources to overcome addiction. For any person in need, there are resources to assist with addiction that traverse the entire county. Currently, “NO” Street Drug is Safe. There is no guarantee when you purchase a controlled substance on the street you are receiving what you are buying. We urge the public to avoid using street drugs more now than ever.
