Incident Summary:

On September 25, 2022, at approximately 2:08 PM, the Petaluma Police Department received a call from Dick’s Sporting Goods, located at 401 Kenilworth Drive, Suite 1030, regarding a theft that had just occurred. It was reported a male suspect entered the store and had stolen clothing items, bicycle accessories, and a black duffle bag. The suspect had exited the store and walked southbound through the shopping center.

On arrival, officers were advised the same suspect had returned to the store without the merchandise and was accompanied by a second suspect. One suspect was detained by officers as he exited the store and was identified as Anthony Thomas. Thomas denied being in the store with anyone else. Shortly thereafter, store employee identified the other involved suspect. The second suspect was detained and identified as Johnte McDowell.
The investigation revealed that on the night of September 24, 2022, at approximately 7:00 PM, Thomas and McDowell had been in the store and stole merchandise. Through a review of missing merchandise and observations, store staff determined the value of the stolen property from the theft on September 24, 2022, was $365.94. Thomas and McDowell were not contacted during that theft. Additionally, the investigation revealed that on September 25, 2022, Thomas and McDowell had arrived at the shopping center in a stolen vehicle, which contained stolen Dick’s merchandise with a value of $348.96.
Thomas was transported and booked at Sonoma County’s Main Adult Detention Facility for violation of 459 PC, 182 (A)(1) PC, 466.6 (A) PC, 10851 (A) VC, 475 (A) PC, and 3452 PC. McDowell was booked at Sonoma County’s Main Adult Detention Facility for violation of 459 PC, 182(A)(1) PC, and 475 (A) PC.

This is the third known time in less than a month the Petaluma Dick’s Sporting Goods store has been targeted by thieves. On September 15, 2022, and September 18, 2022, thieves stole merchandise but fled from the area prior to police arrival.

Organized retail theft continues to be a problem throughout the county, the state, and the country.  In a study released by the Retail Industry Leaders Association and Buy Safe Coalition in 2021, they estimated as much as $68.9 billion worth of products were stolen from retailers in 2019. In addition to the financial impacts the safety of the merchants and shoppers are put at risk.

The Petaluma Police Department would like to thank our community members who continue to call in suspicious activity. It is vigilant community members who contact police in a timely manner to report suspicious activity, that assists officers in apprehending the suspects.
