Weather Update #3: Hurricane Ian

The Jekyll Island Authority has declared a State of Emergency in conjunction with Georgia Governor Brian Kemp's State of Emergency, effective Thursday, September 29, 2022, at 7:00 a.m., and will remain in effect until it expires on October 2, 2022, at 11:59 p.m., unless renewed.

The Executive Order has vested the Jekyll Island State Park Authority Executive Director with the authority in the event of an emergency to take such actions and to issue reasonable orders as necessary to promote and secure the safety and protection of the public on Jekyll Island. Glynn County Schools will be closed Thursday, September 29, and Friday, September 30.

GDOT is monitoring wind conditions for the Sidney Lanier Bridge and any potential closures will be announced as they are known.

Jekyll Island remains under a Tropical Storm Warning and Storm Surge Warning from Hurricane Ian. Initial impacts to the area are anticipated to begin Wednesday evening, due to an additional low-pressure nor’easter storm system impacting the area ahead of the hurricane.

There is a high potential for flash flooding/heavy rainfall, tropical storm-force winds, and tornado threats Wednesday evening through Friday evening.

Please continue to pay close attention to weather updates as they are made available, and follow the latest forecast models from the National Weather Service Jacksonville to stay informed between updates.
