Weather Update #5: Tropical Storm Ian
 
Shell Road is now closed due to downed trees and could remain closed for several days. The entrance to Shell Road at Beachview Drive will remain open for access to Red Bug Pizza.
 
Many Island businesses are closed at this time. Please contact businesses directly for information regarding any change in hours of operations or reopening.
 
A temporary Verizon cell tower is down near the South Water Tower. Verizon cell service is anticipated to be diminished until the tower can be serviced.
 
There have been reports of downed power lines and Georgia Power is actively working on repairs. They will continue to service power outages as long as it remains safe to do so. Power outages can be reported and monitored directly with Georgia Power and contact information can be found through the resource links listed on our website: jekyllisland.com/ian

Jekyll Island remains under a Tropical Storm Warning and Storm Surge Warning from Tropical Storm Ian, which has been downgraded from its previous Hurricane status. Weather conditions are expected to increase today through Friday evening. Potential remains for flash flooding/heavy rainfall, tropical-storm-force winds, and possible tornado threats.
 
Again, there are no evacuations or closures of the Jekyll Island Causeway planned at this time. Conditions are continuing to be monitored and additional updates will be communicated.
 
Previous Updates
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has issued a closure for the Sidney Lanier Bridge beginning Thursday, September 29 at 9 a.m. The closure will remain in effect for all vehicular traffic until further notice, to ensure the bridge has undergone an extensive inspection.

Ameris Bank has announced the closure of its Jekyll Island location for Thursday, September 29, and Friday, September 30, in anticipation of Hurricane Ian. The bank will resume operations on Monday, October 3, unless otherwise communicated.

At this time, Circle K will remain open unless otherwise communicated.

The Jekyll Island Authority has declared a State of Emergency in conjunction with Georgia Governor Brian Kemp's State of Emergency, effective Thursday, September 29, 2022, at 7:00 a.m., and will remain in effect until it expires on October 2, 2022, at 11:59 p.m., unless renewed.
The Executive Order has vested the Jekyll Island State Park Authority Executive Director with the authority in the event of an emergency to take such actions and to issue reasonable orders as necessary to promote and secure the safety and protection of the public on Jekyll Island. The Jekyll Island Authority has updated its facility closures beginning Thursday, September 29 through Friday, September 30. The following facilities will be closed these days, as follows:

  • Jekyll Island Tennis Center
  • Jekyll Island Golf Club
  • Jekyll Island Mini Golf & Bikes
  • Mosaic, Jekyll Island Museum, Faith Chapel, and all Historic Cottages 
  • Georgia Sea Turtle Center
  • JIA-Operated Retail Shops: Life Is Good and Remember When
  • Jekyll Island Convention Center
  • Public Restroom Facilities
  • All Beach Park and Beach Crossovers
  • Clam Creek Fishing Pier
The Jekyll Island Campground will also be closed for further bookings at this time. The Jekyll Island Authority Administrative Offices will be closed but all critical workforce will remain. The Jekyll Island Guest Information Center lobby will also be closed, but 24-hour entry gate service will remain. Normal operations are expected to resume Saturday, October 1, 2022, unless otherwise communicated.

Glynn County Schools will be closed Thursday, September 29, and Friday, September 30.
