Weather Update #6: Tropical Storm Ian
Weather Update #6: Tropical Storm Ian
Although sustained winds remain low, current wind gusts on Jekyll Island have been reported at 40 mph. This is anticipated to increase overnight as Tropical Storm Ian returns to a Category 1 Hurricane as it passes by the area.
Power remains out for 148 Georgia Power customers towards the north end of Jekyll Island. When Georgia Power crews began repairs this morning, wind gusts hit speeds beyond Georgia Power’s safety threshold of 35 mph for any repairs requiring a bucket truck. Georgia Power has assured the JIA that they are aware of what is needed to restore power and will be returning on Friday as soon as the wind speed reduces.
Even with power outages, there are no issues with Jekyll Island water/sewer. Department personnel are on the scene making certain water and sewer operations remain available for those in any affected power outage areas.
In addition to Georgia State Patrol, the Glynn County Sheriff’s Office is actively patrolling the island.
JIA has been in continuous communication with Verizon regarding the antenna that has been damaged on the south end of the island. Verizon is mobilizing to begin the installation of a new, higher tower on Saturday. Once the installation is complete service should be improved.
Again, there are no evacuations or closures of the Jekyll Island Causeway planned at this time. Conditions are continuing to be monitored and additional updates will be communicated.
Jekyll Island remains under a Tropical Storm Warning and Storm Surge Warning from Tropical Storm Ian. Potential remains for flash flooding/heavy rainfall, tropical-storm-force winds, and possible tornado threats.
