Advisory

South Brunswick Police Department Traffic Safety Initiative; Roadway Construction Planned For Route 522

DRIVER SAFETY SERIES:
As part of the South Brunswick Police Department’s Traffic Safety Initiative, designed to address a recent increase in serious motor vehicle crashes statewide, the South Brunswick Police Department will offer a new safe driving tip each Friday in hopes of decreasing car crashes and enhancing driver safety.

Safe Driving Tip #1: Avoid Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system — anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving.

Texting is the most alarming distraction. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that's like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed.

You cannot drive safely unless the task of driving has your full attention. Any non-driving activity you engage in is a potential distraction and increases your risk of crashing.

Operating a motor vehicle is a huge responsibility with safety implications not only for you, but for others on the road as well.

Do your part to make our roadways safer – keep your eyes on the road, your mind on driving, and avoid distractions.
