Community: ARREST UPDATE: Attempted Armed Robbery Suspect Shoots at Officers While Fleeing
On Monday, 9/26/22, around 3:45 am, San Leandro Police officers responded to an attempted armed robbery at 7-11 convenience store located at 333 E. 14th Street. While at the scene, officers spoke with two victims who stated that a suspect brandished a firearm and threatened them. However, the suspect fled the store without obtaining anything.
While officers were speaking with the victims at the store, the suspect was spotted across the street. Officers attempted to detain the suspect, who was armed with a handgun and an extended magazine. The suspect fled, leading officers to pursue him for approximately two blocks before the suspect fired a single shot at the officers. Thankfully, none of our officers were struck by the gunfire, and the officers continued their attempts to apprehend the suspect.
While in the 100 block of Durant Avenue, Officers caught up to the suspect, who pointed his firearm at himself and threatened to commit suicide. Several officers at the scene, who are Crisis Intervention Trained, attempted to de-escalate the incident, resulting in the suspect lowering his firearm and fleeing again. For safety reasons, Officers did not pursue the suspect further and established a containment perimeter. After an extensive search, the suspect was not found; however, his firearm was located in the 100 block of E. 14th Street.
Detectives responded to 7-11 to collect surveillance footage and evidence from the shooting scene.
Detectives and officers relentlessly investigated this shooting, which included speaking to witnesses, reviewing surveillance footage, and sifting through evidence.
By Tuesday, 9/27/22, detectives had identified the suspect as 39-year-old Carlos Onate, an unhoused male from the City of Oakland.
Before 7 pm, detectives located Onate near I-580 and High Street in Oakland. With the assistance of the Oakland Police Department, Onate was arrested after an approximate 170-yard foot pursuit. Onate was not armed at the time of his arrest but did implicate himself when speaking with detectives.
Today, 10/3/22, Onate was formally charged by the Alameda County District Attorney's Office with assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
"We are thankful that our officers did not fall victim to Onate's reckless decisions and for their poise and self-control." "This is yet another example of how this police department will unite to get a violent criminal off the streets for our community," said Lieutenant Matthew Barajas.
The San Leandro Police Property and Evidence Unit received a total of 27 guns in September. Of the 27, 18 were used in criminal activity or connected to an arrest.
