TRAFFIC STOP YIELDS LOADED GUN, DRUGS, AND CASH; 5-YEAR-OLD IN CAR

A proactive San Mateo Police Department officer stops car for vehicle code violation and probation search yields drugs for sale, loaded/unregistered gun, and cash. Both driver and passenger were out on bail for other crimes.

San Mateo, CA – On Sunday, October 2, 2022 at 11:54pm, a San Mateo Police officer on routine patrol stopped a vehicle on La Selva St. at Casa de Campo for a vehicle code violation. The vehicle was occupied by four adults and a 5-year-old child. While conducting a record check of the driver, identified as Fane Havea, and the front passenger, James Williams, it was discovered both were on bail for pending criminal charges and search conditions allowed for a probation search of the car.

During a search of the vehicle, a loaded and unregistered Glock 23 (.40cal rounds) was located in a purse resting on the center console, accessible to both Havea and Williams. Inside a backpack in the front passenger area was a large amount of cash and a large amounted of suspected marijuana. Inside the trunk, more suspected marijuana, cocaine, and methamphetamine were found, along with a digital scale. In total, 56.5 grams of suspected marijuana, 2.37 grams of cocaine, and 90.05 grams of methamphetamine were seized, as was $2067 in cash.

The 5-year-old child was released at the scene to her grandparents and all four adults were transported to SMPD to be interviewed. At SMPD, it was determined both rear passengers were not associated with the illegal items located in the vehicle and were ultimately released. Both Havea and Williams were arrested and transported to the San Mateo County Jail, where they were booked on multiple charges stemming from the narcotics violations, firearm violations, and child endangerment.

SMPD continues to be proactive in getting both guns and drugs off of our streets and out of our community. This was just one more example of the dangerous work our officers face day to day.
