OSBI INVESTIGATES OFFICER-INVOLVED-SHOOTING NEAR CLAREMORE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
 
*** The following update is based on an active and ongoing investigation. The OSBI's initial understanding of the facts and circumstances may evolve over the course of the investigation as witnesses are interviewed and evidence is collected and analyzed.
 
Upon completion of the OSBI investigation, agents will submit a report summarizing their investigation to the office of the prosecuting attorney who will determine whether or not to file charges.
 
CLAREMORE, Okla. (October 6, 2022) – The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), at the request of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), is investigating an officer-involved-shooting involving officers with the Claremore Police Department and deputies from the Rogers County Sheriff’s Office. Based on the initial investigation, this is what is known at this time:

  • The OSBI was requested by the FBI to investigate an officer-involved-shooting just before 5 p.m. on October 5, 2022.
  • Bobby Joe Johnston broke into a Claremore home, accosted the female homeowner before stealing a cell phone and the woman’s vehicle.
  • Claremore police were called and located Johnston driving the stolen vehicle.
  • A short pursuit ensued before Johnston evaded the officers.
  • Shortly thereafter, a crash is reported on I-44 approximately five miles east of Claremore.
  • The Claremore Police Department and the Rogers County Sheriff’s Office respond and set up a perimeter.
  • Johnston eventually emerges from a tree line and approaches law enforcement in a threatening manner.
  • Two officers and one deputy fire their weapon’s at Johnston.
  • Johnston is transported to Hillcrest Claremore Hospital where he died.
The investigation involves Native Americans and falls under the McGirt Supreme Court decision. The OSBI and FBI are jointly working the investigation, which is ongoing. There is no additional information to release at this time.
