News Story - Bike Helmet Donation from Local Service Group

Nature of Incident: Bike Helmet Donation from Local Service Group
Location: City of Camarillo
Date & Time: October 5, 2022
Unit(s) Responsible: Community Resources Unit, Pleasant Valley Lions Club
Narrative:

The Camarillo Police Department and the Pleasant Valley Lion’s Club have partnered to provide helmets to children in Camarillo.

In 2022, the Camarillo Police Department has seen an increase in traffic collisions involving bicyclists and pedestrians.  In several of the incidents, juveniles involved in the collisions were not wearing safety helmets as required by law.  The Camarillo Police Department has been conducting safety presentations to local students in an effort to educate them on the dangers of not wearing a helmet when riding bicycles, skateboards, and scooters.  These presentations highlighted laws, risks, and serious injuries.

In an effort to continue building partnerships with local non-profits to address safety concerns in Camarillo, the Camarillo Police Department reached out to the Pleasant Valley Lion’s Club for help.  On October 5, 2022, members from the Pleasant Valley Lion’s Club came to Camarillo Police Station and graciously donated fifty bicycle helmets.  The fifty helmets will be distributed over the next few weeks to children in the city who need this vital piece of safety equipment.  The helmets came in two colors, pink and black, and in all different sizes.

We want to remind parents and children that it is illegal for persons under 18 years of age to operate a bicycle, scooter, skateboard, roller skates, or in-line skates without the use of a helmet.  Helmets must also meet the standards of either the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) or the United States Consumer Product Safety commission (CPSC).  These fifty helmets meet both standards outlined in the California Vehicle Code.  A full definition of the law is outlined in California Vehicle Code 21212(a).

If your child needs a helmet, they can contact the Camarillo Community Resources Unit at (805) 388-5155 or come by the police station located at 3701 E. Las Posas Road between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

The Camarillo Police Department would like to thank the Pleasant Valley Lions Club for their generous donation.  We love to see kids riding bikes, skateboards, or other self-powered modes of transportation around town; we just want everyone to be safe while doing it.
