Community Message from the Fremont Police Traffic Unit

Good Day! The Fremont Police Department Traffic Unit would like to connect with our community members to be included into our unit operational efforts for safer roadways.  The Traffic Unit follows “Vision Zero” goals and strategies to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for all. Traffic Deaths ARE PREVENTABLE and we can make our roadways safer together: https://visionzeronetwork.org

The Fremont Police Department Traffic Unit relies on three prongs working simultaneously together: Enforcement, Education, and Engineering.  Enforcement efforts consist primarily of police presence and citations in the field to address California Vehicle Code violations. A data driven approach leads our efforts to certain locations, at a certain time of day, with the enforcement of California Vehicle Code violations deemed “Primary Collision Factors” in recent collisions.  Education is a major part of our traffic safety effort. Through CA Office of Traffic Safety grant funding, the Traffic Unit will provide traffic safety education messages throughout the year to highlight pedestrian/bike safety tips and increase awareness of driver behaviors and crash factors that lead to severe injury and fatal collisions. We will continue to post messages and videos to spotlight a specific traffic safety topic. Finally, engineering strives to achieve Vision Zero objectives by evaluating roadway design modifications to balance the needs, safety, and efficiency of all transportation modes, including driving, walking, bicycling, and taking transit.  Key objectives include overall reduction in vehicle speeds, improved traffic progression (less red lights) along a densely signalized corridor, better street/intersection lighting, more visible pedestrian crossings, and better bikeways. Having a more balanced transportation network also promotes more non-driving trips for shorter daily trips like to/from schools, local stores, and parks, which helps to further reduce the amount of traffic on the City’s local roadway network.

The Fremont Police Department Traffic Unit is currently staffed with two (2) motor sergeants, three (3) traffic specialists, three (3) motor officers, two (2) Community Service Officers, and two (2) parking compliance officers. Our team of twelve (12) is always ready to serve the community and help improve traffic safety!
