Man Arrested for Parole Warrant at Casa Grande High School

Incident:                     Man Arrested After Absconding from Parole
Report Number:         22-4349
Occurred Date:          10/8/2022
Location:                  Casa Grande Student Parking Lot
Suspect:      Travis “Darren” Shoemake, 45, Petaluma

Incident Summary

On 10/8/2022, during the Casa Grande Homecoming Dance, Travis Shoemake, a 45-year-old Petaluma resident, called and inquired why there was no law enforcement officers present at the dance for security purposes. He initially said he was a “concerned citizen.” He was told officers were conducting periodic security checks at the school. Based on the anonymous report the school received on Friday, school staff and the police department developed a safety plan and were in communication to ensure the safety of the students. At the time of Shoemake’s initial call officers had conducted security checks twice during the dance.

Shoemake called back a second time and complained there were no police officers on campus, and he was requesting officers respond. Petaluma Police dispatchers asked questions as to Shoemake’s interest and learned Shoemake was on campus despite not having children at the school.  Shoemake said he was concerned for the safety of the children and “recent school shootings across the nation.” A records check revealed, Shoemake was on parole for an assault and had an active warrant for violation of parole under the name Darren Shoemake.  Officers were dispatched to the school to locate and arrest Shoemake.

While officers were responding to the school, the Petaluma Police Department received a telephone call from a student stating that there was a man in the parking lot approaching students and offering his jacket to them if they were cold. The student caller said the man identified himself as Travis and he was “circling the lot” attempting to talk to other students.

As officers arrived on scene Shoemake approached them. Based on their knowledge of the warrant, Shoemake was immediately detained in handcuffs.  Shoemake confirmed he had legally changed his name from Darren to Travis. He admitted to having recently been released from prison and stated he “just wanted to meet people in the community.” He was arrested for his warrant and transported to Sonoma County Jail. He was advised not to return to the campus.

At the time Shoemake was detained and questioned, parents were starting to arrive to pick up their children at the conclusion of the dance. The patrol sergeant met with school administrators to ensure they were aware of the arrest and to coordinate any communication with concerned parents.

The Petaluma Police Department would like to thank the Petaluma City School District, and the Casa Grande High School staff for their continued partnership in ensuring the safety and security of the student body.
