OSBI INVESTIGATES OFFICER-INVOLVED-SHOOTING IN MCINTOSH COUNTY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

*** The following update is based on an active and ongoing investigation. The OSBI's initial understanding of the facts and circumstances may evolve over the course of the investigation as witnesses are interviewed and evidence is collected and analyzed.
 
Upon completion of the OSBI investigation, agents will submit a report summarizing their investigation to the office of the prosecuting attorney who will determine whether or not to file charges.
 
McINTOSH COUNTY, Okla. (October 10, 2022) – The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), at the request of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), is investigating an officer-involved-shooting involving deputies from the McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Checotah Police Department. Based on the initial investigation, this is what is known at this time:

  • The OSBI was requested by the FBI to investigate an officer-involved-shooting around midnight on October 10, 2022.
  • The incident began at 10:42 p.m. on October 9, 2022, when a McIntosh County deputy stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation.
  • The subject driving the stopped vehicle then took off leading deputies on a pursuit.
  • The pursuit was northbound on Highway 69 before heading westbound in I-40.
  • Deputies requested assistance from the Checotah Police Department.
  • The subject is erratically driving his vehicle, sideswiping law enforcement vehicles before driving off the shoulder near mile marker 260. 
  • The subject attempts to enter the tree line but the brush is too thick.
  • The subject turns around, pulls a gun and fires at law enforcement.
  • There is an exchange of gunfire between the subject and law enforcement before the subject is hit.
  • Law enforcement immediately renders aid, but the subject is pronounced deceased at the scene.
  • A weapon was recovered at the scene.
  • The subject’s name is not being released pending next of kin notification.
The investigation involves Native Americans and falls under the McGirt Supreme Court decision. The OSBI investigation is ongoing. There is no additional information to release at this time.
