ARREST UPDATE:

On October 11th, at about 5:00 am, SLPD served a search warrant and arrest warrant for Akbar Bey, a 27-year-old Oakland resident, for the murder of Mr. Mendez. Mr. Bay was arrested without incident.

Detectives obtained a full confession from Bey surrounding his involvement in this case, including shooting Mr. Mendez in the back of his head before he stole the messenger bag containing cash.

Yesterday, Mr. Bey was officially charged by the Alameda Country District Attorney's office for 187 PC - Murder.

This investigation is ongoing.

We will not be releasing any further information at this time as we are seeking additional suspects, accomplices, and witnesses to this incident.

"This is another example of San Leandro Police uniting to work with one another to bring some closure to Mr. Mendez' family and everyone affected by this tragic, senseless incident," said Lieutenant Matthew Barajas

The San Leandro Police Department is saddened to report the victim in this incident has succumbed to his injuries. 

Police are now investigating this matter as a Homicide.  

San Leandro PD and City Staff offer our condolences to the family. 

The family of the victim has asked for privacy concerning this matter, which we will honor.  

The victim was pronounced at 2:15 PM.  




Police Investigate Shooting: 


On September 7th, 2022, at about 11:42 am, SLPD received reports of gunfire near Kaiser Hospital, 2500 Merced Street.  Upon arrival, officers located a GardaWorld carrier (armored guard) suffering from a gunshot wound to the back side of his upper torso. 

He was exiting the hospital's east side of the campus with a messenger bag carrying currency.

Once outside the hospital, the victim was shot by one suspect who fled on foot.  Police believe the suspect ran to an awaiting getaway vehicle.

There is no active threat to this area, although the hospital was placed on "lockdown" as a precaution.

The victim, in this case, is in critical condition.   The guard is a 60-year-old male and has been with the company for nearly 40 years.

"This is an active investigation, and detectives were summoned to the scene immediately."

"Based on what we know at this time, this was a brazen daytime shooting on the Kaiser Hospital campus.  We are grateful no one else was injured during the commission of this crime, but words cannot express how tragic this is," said Lieutenant Matthew Barajas
