NARRATIVE:
On Monday, October 17, 2022, a Pomona police patrol officer, and his trainee were assigned to swing shift (E Squad), and were in the area of Garey Av. and Foothill Blvd. when they noticed a vehicle that failed to make a complete stop at a controlled intersection. Due to the red signal violation, Officers decided to trail the vehicle with the intention to initiate a traffic enforcement stop. During this time, Officers ran the license plate, and found that the vehicle had been reported stolen. Upon the arrival of backing Officers, they conducted a high-risk traffic stop. The driver, and sole occupant of the stolen car, was ordered out and found to be armed with a loaded firearm that was concealed in his front waistband area. Subsequently, the suspect driver was taken into-custody without further incident. The suspect was identified as, YARO VAN DEMIER. VAN DEMER was found to be a previously convicted felon, and self-admitted gang member from a city in the Los Angeles County area.
Suspect VAN DEMIER was booked locally and charged with the aforementioned crimes.
The Pomona Police Department is proactive in enforcing traffic violations. However, traffic stops are inherently dangerous due to unpredictable circumstances and/or the possibility that occupants of a vehicle could be armed. It is for this reason, the Pomona Police Department encourages its citizens to report illegal activity similar to the incident described.
