Officer sees donuts in a parking lot and seizes firearm
San Mateo, CA – On Saturday, October 22, 2022, at approximately 10:45 p.m., a SMPD officer heard tires screeching at the Hillsdale Mall. As the officer drove closer to the sound, she observed a large amount of smoke coming from the top level of one of the parking lots at the mall. When she reached the top level, the officer discovered the source of the smoke. A 2005 Jaguar was moving in a tight circular motion and emitting smoke from the friction. Several people and vehicles were perilously close to the continuously spinning vehicle.
The officer immediately conducted an enforcement stop of the vehicle for reckless driving. When the vehicle came to rest, the officer contacted and identified a 17-year-old male driver and a 17-year-old male passenger. Officers conducted an inventory search prior to impounding the Jaguar. Officers discovered a red shoulder bag on the driver’s side that contained a 9mm Ruger pistol loaded with an extended magazine and an additional magazine. Through on scene investigation, officers learned the Ruger had been stolen, but the theft had not been reported. Because a firearm was located in the vehicle, officers conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle and located marijuana blunts, a bag of loose marijuana, and scales. The juvenile male driver was arrested and transported to Hillcrest Juvenile Hall. He was booked on multiple charges. Officers released the passenger to his parent.
Remember, “If you see something, say something.” We are encouraging our community to utilize security cameras. They are especially helpful in identifying suspicious activity in neighborhoods when cameras are street facing. Our officers regularly canvass for surveillance and you can help us by notifying SMPD where cameras are located in your neighborhood at www.cityofsanmateo.org/Nest.
