Incident Summary

On 10/26/2022 at approximately 5:36 PM, the Petaluma Police Department Dispatch Center received an emergency call from a community member reporting there were approximately twenty juveniles fighting near the intersection of 2nd and D Street. During the fight, the reporting party observed one of the involved parties pull a handgun from his person and point it at others involved in the fight.

Shortly after Petaluma PD officers began to respond, the crowd dispersed and fled in several directions. A description of the subject with the suspected firearm was provided to officers and upon their initial arrival, two of the involved parties were detained inside Walnut Park.

PPD Dispatch then received a call from a separate community member reporting two of the involved parties were seen running into a nearby restaurant and were hiding to the rear of the business. Officers received an updated description of the subject believed to be in possession of the firearm. One of the juveniles seen in the nearby business matched the updated description.

PPD Officers responded to the business and located both subjects to the rear of the business and detained them. During the interaction, a replica firearm was located in an associated backpack that had been described by both callers.

The original reporting party responded to the business where two of the involved subjects were detained. The reporting party positively identified a 17-year-old male as the subject who displayed the firearm at other juveniles during the fight.

The juvenile was subsequently arrested for displaying a replica firearm and possessing a BB gun in public. He was later booked at the Sonoma County Juvenile Hall.

The Petaluma Police Department would like to thank the community members who called and assisted with the apprehension of the suspect in this incident. The BB gun had no visible markings on it to help distinguish it from a real firearm.
