The Upper Macungie Township Police Department has an important message for you! *Halloween Safety Tips*

Tonight is Trick or Treat night in Upper Macungie Township!

Tips to keep your kids safe on Halloween
For parents and children:

Children under 12 should trick or treat and cross the streets with an adult.
Always walk on sidewalks. If no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.
Cross the street at corners and use crosswalks. Parents should remind children to watch for cars that are turning or backing up. This includes crossing driveways.
Look left, right, and left again when crossing the street. Keep looking as you cross. Walk don’t run when crossing the street or driveways.

For Drivers:
Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.
Anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and turn your headlights on earlier so you can spot children from a greater distance.
Remember that costumes can limit children's vision and they may not be able to see your vehicle.
Reduce any distractions inside your vehicle while driving.

Costumes and Treats:
Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape, choose light-colored costumes, or use glow sticks to improve visibility.
Use non-toxic face paints and Halloween makeup instead of masks. Masks can obstruct a child's vision.
Avoid carrying sticks, swords, and other sharp objects.
Carry glow sticks and flashlights to see better and to be better seen by drivers. Remember, liquid glow sticks can be hazardous so remind kids not to chew on or break them.
Check all candy and treats for signs of tampering before allowing anyone to eat them. Only eat prepackaged candy and treats that are not homemade. If there is any sign of tampering, open, or unwrapped candy, throw it away.

Have a fun night and we'll see you tonight!
