The Monroe Township Police Department would like to alert our residents of a new type of scam that is affecting our community.  Yesterday, the Monroe Township Police Department received a report from one of our residents about a scam phone call they received.  The resident advised that their caller ID showed that the Monroe Township Police Department was calling and further showed the department phone number (732-521-0222).  The suspect on the line advised our resident that he was a police officer with the Monroe Township Police Department and further used the name of one of our officers.  It appeared during the phone call the suspect was attempting to confuse our resident in hopes of them turning over their personal information and/or money.  The suspect spoofed his phone number to make it look like the police department was calling.  The Monroe Township Police Department would like to take this opportunity to remind our residents about scam phone calls and to not give any personal information out over the phone.  The Monroe Township Police Department DOES NOT solicit money over the phone.  If you received a phone call from the police department and you are unsure if it is a legitimate phone call, ask for the officers name and advise them you will call them back.  Then contact the police at 732-521-0222 and asked to speak with that officer.  The good news is our resident was not falling for this suspects shenanigans and immediately hung up the phone and called the police department.
