AMARILLO POLICE DEPARTMENT
MEDIA/PUBLIC RELEASE

DATE:    November 3, 2022

TIME:  N/A

CASE NUMBER:   N/A

INCIDENT TYPE: Amarillo Police warn drivers about the dangers of stopping in the roadway.

OFFICER SUBMITTING RELEASE: Martin Birkenfeld-Chief of Police; Sgt. Carla Burr-PIO

DETAILS:
The Holiday season is fast approaching, and we can expect to see more people on the road. Recently there is an increase in people at intersections asking for donations for various reasons. There is also an increase in pedestrians being struck by vehicles.  Here are things everyone should be mindful of when driving or walking:

•        It is dangerous and illegal to stop in traffic to give money to pedestrians.  This disrupts the normal flow of traffic and may cause crashes.
•        Some panhandlers may be taking advantage of people with good hearts.
•        There are safer ways to donate that provide money to agencies that work directly with people in our community who need food or housing.
•        Giving money to local charities ensures that your donation dollars are spent on services to help those in need.

The need is real, so please continue to give—just not on the streets.
