South Brunswick Police Driver Safety Series; Traffic Enforcement Details Scheduled; St. Cecilia's Veterans Day Mass

DRIVER SAFETY SERIES:
As part of the South Brunswick Police Department’s Traffic Safety Initiative, designed to address a recent increase in serious motor vehicle crashes statewide, the South Brunswick Police Department will offer a new safe driving tip each Friday in hopes of decreasing car crashes and enhancing driver safety.

Safe Driving Tip #6 – Maintain a Safe Following Distance:

Every year, thousands of Americans are killed in rear-end collisions and hundreds of thousands more are injured. A report from the National Transportation Safety Board several years ago noted that nearly half of all two-vehicle accidents are rear-end collisions. The report also cited a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study which concluded that 87% of rear-end car accidents were the result of a driver not paying attention to the vehicle in front of them.

Both of these statistics and others like them point to the dangers of tailgating, the act of following the vehicle in front of you too closely.

Tailgating can often cause an accident because following the vehicle in front of you too closely reduces the amount of reaction time you have if the vehicle in front of you stops abruptly. A typical reaction time is about ¾ second, and that’s if you’re paying full attention. Add another ¾ second to decide to act, and that’s 1 ½ seconds. In that 1 ½ seconds at 55 mph, your vehicle has traveled 121 feet – the equivalent of about 5 or 6 car lengths, and you haven’t even begun to slow down yet. This can lead to a rear-end collision, or may force you to swerve into another lane or even oncoming traffic as a way to avoid a rear-end collision, putting you at risk for a serious crash.

When you tailgate, it puts you at a greater risk for an accident and jeopardizes your safety, as well as the safety of your passengers and the people in the other vehicle. That’s why it’s always important to leave plenty of distance between your car and the one you’re following.

The 3-second rule advises you to stay at least three seconds behind the one you’re following, to give you enough time to react if the car in front of you stops abruptly. Maintaining this space between cars is a simple and proven way to avoid rear-end collisions.

If another vehicle is tailgating you there are several things you can do to minimize the risk of an accident, including:
• Safely change lanes and let the other car pass you
• Drive in the right lane on multi-lane roadways
• Drive the speed limit
• Don’t tap on the brakes to send a message to the car behind you

By staying alert, using defensive driving tactics, and maintaining a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front of yours, you can keep you and your loved ones safe from an accident.
