News Story - Award for FY22 Enhanced Collaborative Model Task Force to Combat Human Trafficking

Nature of Incident: Award for FY22 Enhanced Collaborative Model Task Force to Combat Human Trafficking

Location: Ventura County
Date & Time:

Unit(s) Responsible:

November 2022

Ventura County Human Trafficking Task Force

Narrative:

In October 2022 the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office was awarded with the FY22 Enhanced Collaborative Model Task Force to Combat Human Trafficking in the amount of $750,000.00. What assisted in the winning of this award was the sustainability plan established in the last three years of a county wide task force to combat human trafficking with an emphasis on victim-centered and trauma informed investigations and resource opportunities for victims of human trafficking. The duration of the grant began October 2022 and ends October 2025.

  • Moving forward into the next three years, some of the deliverables that must be accomplished by the task force are as follows:

  • Enhance, sustain, and strengthen the co-leadership structure and coordination of the Ventura County Human Trafficking Task Force.

  • Revise and address gaps that appeared in protocol of response to human trafficking in Ventura County.

  • Continue to identify and serve human trafficking victims, along with aggressive stances towards prosecuting traffickers and exploiters.

Each year, the amount of victims and arrests made has doubled itself. In 2019, nine victims were served with resources from the task force and in 2021, 46 victims were identified and offered the same assistance. The task force continues to track statistics for Ventura County Sheriff jurisdiction and is placed on a public facing dashboard for the community.

The task force has created training opportunities for the public and for law enforcement personnel by providing tailored training for over more than 1,000 attendees that range from faith-based groups, the hospitality industry, local transportation businesses, and all the local law enforcement agencies.

The task force would continue its aggressive stance on identifying and arresting traffickers, while continuing to provide victims with proper tools and resources for rehabilitation. The task force would like to thank the public for its continued support and dedication to learning how to identify human trafficking in our community and how to properly report the crime.

Detectives encourage victims to contact “211” or local law enforcement if you believe you are victim or know a victim of human trafficking to be connected with services. If you wish to inquire about training opportunities, please email [email protected] which is the Ventura County Coalition Against Human Trafficking who works in collaboration with the task force.
