OSBI Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting in Claremore

*** The following update is based on an active and ongoing investigation. The OSBI's initial understanding of the facts and circumstances may evolve over the course of the investigation as witnesses are interviewed and evidence is collected and analyzed.
Upon completion of the OSBI investigation, agents will submit a report summarizing their investigation to the office of the prosecuting attorney who will determine whether or not to file charges.

Claremore, Okla. (November 9, 2022) - The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), at the request of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Rogers County Sheriff's Office, is investigating an officer-involved-shooting involving deputies from the Rogers County Sheriff’s Office and a Marshal with the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service. Based on the initial investigation, this is what is known at this time:

  • Rogers County Sheriff's Office responded to a disturbance call at a business located at 6429 East Tower Lane, Claremore, OK.
  • Deputies were initially informed of a man with a nail gun causing a disturbance inside the business.
  • The subject, William Fairweather (W/M, 39 years old), locked himself in an office in the business, and refused to exit.
  • Rogers County deputies and a Marshal with the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service attempted to speak with Fairweather, but Fairweather remained uncooperative.
  • Fairweather threatened law enforcement with the nail gun and law enforcement fired upon Fairweather, striking him.  Fairweather was pronounced dead at the scene.
  • The Medical Examiner's Office will determine cause and manner of death.
  • The OSBI is being assisted in the investigation by the FBI, Cherokee Nation Marshal Service, Rogers County Sheriff's Office, and Rogers County District Attorney's Office.
The investigation involves Native Americans and falls under the McGirt Supreme Court decision. The OSBI investigation is ongoing. There is no additional information to release at this time.
