South Brunswick Driver Safety Series; Traffic Enforcement Details

DRIVER SAFETY SERIES:
As part of the South Brunswick Police Department’s Traffic Safety Initiative, designed to address a recent increase in serious motor vehicle crashes statewide, the South Brunswick Police Department will offer a new safe driving tip each Friday in hopes of decreasing car crashes and enhancing driver safety.

Safe Driving Tip #7 – The Move Over Law:

The shoulder of the roadway offers a limited amount of space for emergency vehicles to conduct operations. Police use the shoulder to conduct car stops or assist disabled vehicles. Ambulances use it to help those injured in car crashes, and fire trucks use it to assist during a fire, or while helping with extricating passengers from a crashed motor vehicle. Tow trucks use the shoulder to pick up disabled vehicles, and highway maintenance vehicles use the shoulder to work on roadways and to remove debris from the lanes of travel. All of these workers are in danger every day of being struck by passing vehicles.

The Move Over Law was enacted to give those workers a safe buffer from traffic. Giving the response vehicle extra space with a lane change is the most effective way of avoiding a crash with the vehicle, driver, or a passenger. Slowing down and paying extra attention also helps reduce these avoidable accidents.

Many drivers are mindful of the potential dangers of a roadway emergency. They instinctively slow down and proceed cautiously when they see an emergency response vehicle on the side of the road. But it only takes one mistake for tragedy to strike. Moreover, too many drivers fail to use extra caution around highway maintenance or utility worker vehicles. They only move over for traditional emergency responders, such as ambulances, police vehicles, and fire trucks.

The Move Over Law requires drivers to switch lanes to at least one full lane away from the emergency vehicle displaying flashing lights, if it is possible to do so safely and legally, or to slow down and be ready to stop if it is not possible to switch lanes.

Failure to do so may lead to a tragic accident, with an emergency response worker losing their life.

The law pertains to the following authorized emergency vehicles:

  • Police vehicles
  • Ambulances
  • Fire department vehicles
  • Tow trucks
  • Department of Transportation trucks
  • Utility worker vehicles
  • Highway maintenance vehicles
  • Sanitation vehicles
  • Other emergency response vehicles
So, take care and move over for safety on New Jersey’s roadways when you come upon a stationary emergency response vehicle with flashing lights. You might just save a life.
